Liu Chengrui

Liu Chengrui was born in Qinghai in 1983. He graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Qinghai Normal University in 2005 and currently lives and works in Beijing. Since the beginning of his practice, he has primarily worked through performance, painting, and writing. In his live performances, he uses his own body as the subject, placing action and performance side by side to condense the suffering and poetic dimensions of ordinary people. His durational performances gently work with participants over extended periods of time, reshaping life scenes and social identities together. In his painting practice, he is fascinated by the intense colors within the image and the life force latent within it. His writing is mainly centered on poetry; in 2017, he began writing fiction as a way to complete stories that other artistic languages could not fully realize.
